Joan Miró was born in 1893 outside of Barcelona, Spain.  He is known for combining abstraction with surrealism.  He traveled to France in 1919 where he associated with many artists including Picasso.  It was there that he became known as an artist.  He returned to Spain in 1940, where he lived and worked until his death in 1983.
