El Greco

El Greco was born in Crete in 1541, and worked in Italy before moving to Spain in about 1577. His full name was Doménikos Theotokópoulos, and he usually signed his paintings in Greek letters with this name. He is, however, generally known as El Greco (“the Greek”). Many paintings were done in the 16th century Venetian Renaissance style, depicting religious figures and scenes. He died in Toledo in 1614.
