Diego Rodriguez de Silva Velázquez was born in Seville, Spain in 1599.  He was a portrait painter who worked in the court of King Phillip IV. He painted landscapes, mythological and religious subjects, and scenes from common life (such as tavern scenes).

He was referred to as the “noblest and most commanding man among the artists of his country”.
